Byron Donalds Faces David Jolly

Byron Donalds and David Jolly won Florida’s gubernatorial primaries.

Rep. Byron Donalds won Florida’s Republican primary for governor and former Rep. David Jolly won the Democratic nomination, setting up a November race to replace term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis. Donalds, endorsed by President Donald Trump, took about 49% in an 11-candidate GOP field, with Lt. Gov. Jay Collins second at about 25%. Jolly is a former Republican congressman who ran as a Democrat and defeated five primary opponents. Florida last elected a Democratic governor in 1994.

Republican Advantage

Disney Sues Trump's FCC

Disney and ABC say the FCC's license moves violate free speech and threaten the network.

Disney and ABC sued the Federal Communications Commission and Chair Brendan Carr in U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, seeking to block an early license-renewal process for ABC’s eight owned-and-operated TV stations. The complaint says the Trump administration retaliated against ABC over its broadcasts, including news coverage, late-night satire and “The View,” violating the First Amendment. The FCC ordered the stations in late April to file renewal applications ahead of schedule. ABC also moved for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction while the case proceeds.

Trump-FCC censorship

Left & Center

Trump and his allies at the FCC are using government power to pressure, punish, or silence ABC over coverage and programming they dislike. Disney and ABC’s lawsuit is a justified First Amendment challenge to that retaliatory campaign against the network.

Day 44

Trump Denies Iran Talks

Trump says the U.S. has no talks planned with Iran as Hormuz Strait tensions rise.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the U.S. has no talks underway or scheduled with Iran, ending diplomacy after a 60-day ceasefire memorandum expired Monday without a peace agreement. He said the U.S. naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz remains in “full force” and that the waterway is “open and operating.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Washington was “begging” to negotiate, while Iran signaled a more offensive military posture. Trump also threatened Oman over its reported talks with Iran on managing Hormuz shipping.

Coercion Over Diplomacy

Balanced

Trump is moving away from negotiations with Iran and toward a coercive strategy built around economic pressure, blockade, or prolonged strangulation. The shift amounts to disengagement from diplomacy rather than a serious effort to reach a negotiated settlement.

Justified Retaliation

Balanced

The U.S. is justified in retaliating against Iran and its proxies with strikes, blockade enforcement, and economic pressure; opponents argue this abandons diplomacy and risks wider conflict.

Reckless Trump War

Left & Center

Trump’s impulsive, incoherent Iran policy has dragged the U.S. into a reckless war of choice, weakening allies and U.S. readiness while handing adversaries strategic gains and leaving only bad options.
