Kyle Kirkwood won the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., taking his No. 27 Honda to a 3.0906-second victory over Christian Lundgaard in the IndyCar street race. The event ran 147 laps on a 1.7-mile circuit around the National Mall, totaling about 250 miles as part of celebrations for the nation’s 250th anniversary. President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump made a ceremonial lap in the presidential limousine before Trump waved the green flag to start the race.

The United States imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion in Canadian goods after trade talks with Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government collapsed late Friday. Carney suspended negotiations, said Washington’s latest terms were “un-economic” and “unfair,” and pledged matching Canadian tariffs while saying no deal was preferable to the offer on the table. Trump responded Sunday that Canada “wants the benefits of being a State” and accused it of charging U.S. farmers high tariffs.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met privately in recent weeks in New York with Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and outside adviser, as House control looms in the November midterms. They discussed possible cooperation between House Democrats and the White House on immigration, housing and cost-of-living issues. The meeting opens a channel to Jeffries, who would be in line for speaker if Democrats win the House.
