Hershey Says It Will Shift Back To Classic Recipe For All Reese's Products After Criticism
Overview
The Hershey Company said it will phase out certain compound coatings and return select Reese's and Hershey's items to classic milk or dark chocolate recipes by 2027.
The move follows public criticism from Brad Reese, the grandson of Reese's founder, who posted a letter on LinkedIn in February saying some products had replaced milk chocolate with compound coatings.
Brad Reese called Hershey's announcement a "PR move" and "total bunk" and said he discarded products he found inedible, while other members of the Reese family publicly distanced themselves from his remarks.
Hershey said the changes will affect less than 3% of Reese's items and a small portion of its broader portfolio, and it plans to remove artificial colors and increase R&D spending by 25%.
Hershey said it will also enhance Kit Kat for a creamier taste and expects to complete the recipe shifts and color changes by 2027.
