The reporting
The U.S. had recorded 2,318 confirmed measles cases in 2026 as of July 23, surpassing the 2,289 cases reported in all of 2025 with five months left in the year. The CDC tally makes 2026 the highest U.S. measles year since 1991 and the second consecutive year of record levels since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000. The CDC says 93% of infected people were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status. Last year’s outbreaks included the deaths of two unvaccinated children.
