Cyclospora Outbreak Deaths

Michigan health officials reported Monday that two people have died in the state’s cyclosporiasis outbreak, the first confirmed U.S. deaths tied to the diarrhea-causing Cyclospora parasite. Both had significant underlying health conditions that may have been affected by cyclosporiasis and dehydration, and officials did not release their identities. The outbreak has sickened 11,234 people in Michigan and is part of a multistate outbreak affecting nine states. Cyclosporiasis is typically linked to food or water contaminated with the microscopic parasite and can cause severe diarrhea.
