The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most outlets agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

Delta Air Lines Flight 1076 landed safely at Chicago Midway International Airport around 8:30 p.m. on July 4 after a fireworks mortar struck the aircraft during descent, the FAA said. The flight was arriving from Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Airport with 52 passengers and six crew members aboard. Air traffic control audio captured the crew reporting that a firework hit the plane and that they “definitely felt a big bang” while continuing the approach. Delta removed the aircraft from service for inspection, and the FAA is investigating.
