The reporting
Thieves stole four 15th-century works attributed to Antonello da Messina from the MuMe regional museum in Messina, Sicily, during Italy’s Ferragosto holiday. The stolen pieces were three of the five surviving panels of the San Gregorio Polyptych and a double-sided panel showing the Madonna with Child and Christ in Pietà. The thieves bypassed alarm and security systems on Saturday evening as crowds gathered elsewhere in Messina for Assumption celebrations. The works are valued at millions of euros and include panels from the only surviving Antonello work left in his hometown.
