Christa Pike Execution Halted

What happened

A federal appeals court halted Christa Pike’s planned execution about an hour before Tennessee was set to carry it out. The Sixth Circuit said it needed more time to review whether Pike’s claims of childhood sexual abuse and rape were fully considered before she was sentenced to death. Pike was convicted of murdering 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in 1995, when Pike was 18. Her lethal injection would have been Tennessee’s first execution of a woman in more than 200 years. Pike’s lawyers say her abuse, rape, mental illness and limited jury record should have mattered. Prosecutors called the filings a late technical objection. The stay is temporary, and the state has asked the Supreme Court to lift it.
