Murphy's 'Awesome' Reply Ignites GOP Fury Over Iran Blockade

Sen. Chris Murphy posted "Awesome" on X in response to a shipping journal report saying at least 26 Iran-linked vessels transited past a U.S. blockade.

The report, which tracked tanker movements tied to Iranian trade, became a flashpoint that critics said undermined U.S. efforts to enforce the blockade.

The White House Rapid Response account on X accused Murphy of rooting for the opposition and called him a 'loser,' and Republican lawmakers including Sens. John Barrasso and Tom Cotton condemned his post.

Murphy introduced a War Powers Resolution in March 2026 to force removal of U.S. forces from hostilities against Iran, and the measure failed in a near party-line vote.

Murphy said his post was sarcasm, urged that the war be ended, and said he would be more careful about sarcasm on X.
