Behind Closed Doors, Some Top Republicans Want A Ghislaine Maxwell Pardon
Overview
House Oversight Chairman James Comer said on Wednesday that some Republican members support a presidential pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for her cooperation with the committee's investigation into Jeffrey Epstein.
Maxwell is serving a 20-year sentence in a Texas federal prison for sex trafficking connected to Jeffrey Epstein and said she would testify only if granted clemency after invoking her Fifth Amendment right in a February deposition.
Ranking Member Rep. Robert Garcia said Democrats uniformly oppose any pardon, calling Maxwell a sexual abuser who facilitated rape, while Chairman Comer said he personally opposes granting clemency.
President Donald Trump has issued more than 1,700 pardons since returning to office in 2025, including nearly 1,600 Jan. 6 rioters.
Trump has not ruled out pardoning Maxwell, and the Oversight Committee is continuing its probe with further witness interviews after deposing multiple people who knew Epstein.
