Sen. Fetterman Stands Behind PA Supreme Court Justice Who Is Done With Democrats Over Antisemitism
Overview
Justice David Wecht said in a statement that he is no longer registered with any political party, citing an "acquiescence to Jew-hatred" in the Democratic Party.
His announcement followed reported clashes outside New York City synagogues, including an incident near Young Israel Senior Services of Midwood where police said three people were arrested and Hezbollah flags and chants were seen.
Sen. John Fetterman said he "fully understands" Wecht's personal choice, affirmed he is not changing parties, and wrote that "the Democratic Party must confront its own rising antisemitism problem."
Wecht said he served as vice-chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party from 1998 to 2001, was elected to the state Supreme Court in 2015, began serving in 2016, and was retained in 2025.
Wecht urged Americans to oppose Jew-hatred before it "undermines" the nation, and Fetterman wrote in a May 7 op-ed that he has "no plans to leave" the Democratic Party.
