Overview
Rep. Nancy Mace introduced a joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment to bar naturalized citizens from serving in Congress, becoming federal judges, or holding Senate-confirmed positions.
Mace said the amendment would apply the same natural-born standard required for president and vice president and called the measure "long overdue."
Rep. Pramila Jayapal called the proposal "narrow-minded" and "xenophobic" and urged colleagues to condemn it, and Rep. Shri Thanedar mocked Mace on social media.
Twenty-six House members are foreign-born (19 Democrats, seven Republicans), and six senators were born outside the U.S., and Republicans Bernie Moreno and Victoria Spartz were named as affected.
The proposal must win two-thirds votes in both chambers and be ratified by three-fourths of state legislatures to become part of the Constitution, and it faces long odds.
