Overview
President Donald Trump on Thursday warned the Supreme Court it would be "a disgrace" if it rules against his effort to end birthright citizenship, as the justices prepare a ruling by July.
The case challenges Trump’s January 20, 2025 executive order directing agencies to deny citizenship to children born in the U.S. to parents who are undocumented or temporary visa holders.
The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups challenged the order, lower courts blocked its implementation, and justices including Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett questioned the government at April oral arguments.
Researchers estimate the order would affect roughly 255,000 children born in the U.S. each year and about 2.5 million over a decade, while Trump has claimed 20 to 25 percent figures in public remarks.
The Supreme Court heard arguments in April and will hand down a ruling by July that will decide whether the 14th Amendment’s citizenship clause covers nearly all children born on U.S. soil.
