Sherrill says DHS restores Delaney Hall family visitation amid protests, warns outside agitators to stay home
Overview
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka imposed a curfew from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. around Delaney Hall after clashes between protesters and police escalated Sunday.
The clashes followed more than a week of protests over alleged poor living conditions and reported hunger strikes at the 1,000-bed immigration detention facility, which DHS denies.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill said DHS restored family visitation at noon Sunday and urged outside agitators to stay home, while lawmakers including Hakeem Jeffries conducted an oversight visit.
Authorities reported roughly three to six arrests, including at least one for unlawful possession of a weapon, and said state police fired tear gas and used nonlethal tactics while expanding a secured perimeter within a half-mile.
Officials said federal enforcement remained inside the facility, law enforcement would escort visiting family members, and the curfew and increased security will remain in place until further notice.
Analysis
Center-leaning sources emphasize public order and conflict by leading with curfew and 'intense clashes,' foregrounding official statements about 'masked individuals' and 'violent riots.' Editorial choices — limited direct protester voices, repeated focus on barricades and police response, and selection of law-enforcement framing — tilt coverage toward safety and authority concerns while reporting protesters' grievances as background.
