The reporting

Left & Center
A neutral summary of the key facts most outlets agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

The Supreme Court declined to hear President Donald Trump’s appeal of a 2023 New York federal jury verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll, leaving a $5 million civil judgment in place. The case stemmed from Carroll’s allegation that Trump assaulted her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room in the mid-1990s and later defamed her when he denied her account. None of the justices publicly dissented from the order, which means Trump must pay the judgment unless other post-verdict issues affect collection. Trump is separately appealing an $83.3 million defamation verdict Carroll won in a related case.

Trump ReactionBalanced

Trump responded on Truth Social by calling Carroll’s case “Fake,” expressing surprise that the Supreme Court declined review, and vowing to “continue the fight” against what he described as weaponization and lawfare. Commentary and reaction pieces framed the decision as a rare Supreme Court setback for Trump and emphasized that the ruling leaves him obligated to pay Carroll $5 million.
