The reporting
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday the Trump administration would launch a campaign to “dismantle” the International Criminal Court and urged other governments to join it. In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece, Rubio called the ICC an “unaccountable arbiter of a new global law” and said it claims authority to prosecute U.S. officials and service members. Rubio argued the court threatens American sovereignty by interfering with U.S. military and law-enforcement operations. The Hague-based ICC investigates and prosecutes individuals accused of war crimes and other serious international crimes.
Analysis & opinion
Protect International JusticeBalanced
Rubio’s campaign against the ICC undermines international law and weakens the idea that powerful countries can be held accountable. Attacking the court threatens justice for war crimes and damages global mechanisms meant to restrain abuses.
Defend U.S. SovereigntyLeans Right
The ICC has no legitimate authority over Americans and threatens the constitutional sovereignty of the United States. Rubio is right to confront and dismantle that overreach before an unaccountable international body can claim power over U.S. citizens.
