The reporting
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said about 6,600 people who marked themselves as noncitizens while obtaining driver’s licenses or state IDs were improperly added to voter rolls because of a Motor Vehicle Commission software error. The registrations occurred from 2023 to 2024, and roughly 400 of the registrants cast ballots. The Trump administration demanded the registrants’ identities and cited the error to promote the proof-of-citizenship SAVE Act. Sherrill refused to release personal voter records, while MVC vendor IDEMIA disputed the state’s description of a serious software error.
