The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most outlets agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

The Democratic National Committee’s Rules and Bylaws Committee voted Friday to recommend South Carolina open Democrats’ 2028 presidential nominating calendar, with the state assigned the first primary slot on Jan. 22. South Carolina won 26 votes on the 49-member panel, beating Nevada with 19 votes and New Hampshire with four. The proposed order would place Nevada and New Hampshire after South Carolina and continue Democrats’ break from Iowa and New Hampshire leading the calendar. The full DNC is expected to vote on the plan at its August meeting in Austin, Texas.
