The reporting
President Donald Trump said the United States will not move forward with a 30-year civilian nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia unless Riyadh joins the Abraham Accords and normalizes relations with Israel. The statement came after Energy Secretary Chris Wright and his Saudi counterpart signed the nuclear agreement on July 22, which would support a Saudi civilian nuclear power program and involve U.S. nuclear materials. Trump said the Israel-normalization condition had been understood during negotiations, rejecting suggestions that it was newly added.
Analysis & opinion
Corrupt Saudi DealLeans Left
Trump’s approach to Saudi Arabia is reckless, chaotic, and tainted by incompetence and personal corruption. The Saudi nuclear push looks less like serious policy than a foreign-policy fiasco driven by Trump’s self-interest and desire for an easy victory.
