Syria’s Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus sentenced ousted former President Bashar al-Assad and his younger brother Maher to death in absentia on Aug. 11. The court convicted them of war crimes, crimes against humanity, murder and torture linked to abuses before and during Syria’s 14-year civil war. Assad was tried while in Russia, where he fled with his family after a rebel offensive toppled his government in December 2024. The conflict killed about half a million people and displaced millions.
