The reporting
Allies of Michigan Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers asked AIPAC not to advertise for him against Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed, despite Rogers saying he welcomes support from pro-Israel backers. Rogers met AIPAC chair Michael Tuchin in Los Angeles last week, and the group shelved an already produced video ad attacking El-Sayed the next day. El-Sayed, a critic of Israel’s government, narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens in a divisive Democratic primary. Rogers is making a second Senate bid after losing a Michigan Senate race by about 20,000 votes.
Analysis & opinion
AIPAC backlashBalanced
Mike Rogers’ break with AIPAC shows how the lobby’s intervention in the Michigan Senate race created political complications even for the Republican it helped. His distancing from the group points to a broader GOP tension over Israel and the electoral risks of being tied too closely to AIPAC.
