DHS Seeks Voter Database Revival

Solicitor General D. John Sauer asked the Supreme Court to stay a June lower-court order blocking the Trump administration’s expanded use of DHS’s SAVE database to check voters’ citizenship before the midterm elections. The Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program would let states use Social Security numbers and other federal records to flag potential noncitizens on voter rolls. A federal judge in Washington, D.C., found the overhaul violated privacy law, and a federal appeals court left the injunction in place. The order has kept SAVE-based voter roll audits on hold in most of the country.
