What changed today: House Speaker Mike Johnson said President Donald Trump’s $5,000 “Trump Dividend” checks would need Congress before they could happen. Trump said he did not think Congress had to authorize the checks, then insisted they would happen “100%,” funded partly by tariffs. Trump proposed the checks for every American adult if Republicans keep the House and Senate, announcing the plan in Dallas. The plan would cost more than $1 trillion. Rep. Mike Lawler questioned how to pay for it; Douglas Holtz-Eakin called it “disastrous” for the economy.

The Washington Examiner also reported Republicans had “zero time” to discuss it before the announcement. Fox Business highlighted Trump’s claim that the country can “easily” afford the checks and that he keeps pledges. Newsmax noted Lawler said his allegiance is to his constituents and he does not always agree with Trump.
