An intense heat dome put about 55 million people in the Western U.S. under heat alerts Saturday, with most alerts in parts of California, Nevada and Arizona and others extending north to the Canadian border. The ridge of high pressure, spanning Arizona to Montana, was expected to push temperatures near or above records, including 110 to 120 degrees in the Southwest through early next week. The heat increased wildfire risk in dry or already burning areas, especially parts of Oregon and Washington where low humidity and strong winds raised concerns about rapid fire spread.
