The reporting
Former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom said he is declaring for the 2027 WNBA Draft, announcing on X Friday that he considers himself eligible after reviewing the league’s rules. Freedom said “if simply declaring who you are is all that’s required,” he meets every requirement, framing the move as a challenge to the WNBA’s approach to self-identification and transgender-player eligibility. The 6-foot-10, 250-pound former NBA player spent 11 seasons in the NBA and was waived by the Houston Rockets in February 2022.

The WNBA’s transgender-athlete policy undermines its status as a women’s league by potentially allowing male athletes to compete. The league must clearly define eligibility for women’s basketball or accept that players such as Enes Kanter Freedom could exploit the policy.
