The reporting
A judge is weighing Karmelo Anthony’s request for a new trial after his June 9 murder conviction and 35-year sentence for stabbing 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Texas high school track meet. At an August 20 hearing, the prosecutor said both sides had agreed to keep evidence from jurors because of racial tensions and death threats surrounding the case. The evidence included claims that Anthony stalked an ex-girlfriend, focused on knives, guns and fights, and texted that he was “on the verge” of stabbing someone hours before the killing.
Analysis & opinion
Talarico sided wronglyLeans Right
James Talarico wrongly aligned himself with Karmelo Anthony by suggesting the conviction reflected racial unfairness in the justice system. His comments about Black jurors and Black Texans unfairly cast doubt on a valid murder conviction.
Conviction justifiedLeans Right
Karmelo Anthony’s murder conviction was justified because he was the aggressor and the evidence points toward guilt rather than an unfair trial. Newly revealed details about his behavior before the killing make his bid for a new trial look weaker, not stronger.
