Meta launches WhatsApp ‘incognito’ mode to address privacy concerns for AI chats
Overview
Meta said Wednesday it is rolling out an incognito mode for Meta AI chats on WhatsApp and the Meta AI app that processes messages in a secure environment even Meta cannot access.
Meta said incognito chats are not saved by default and disappear when a session ends to let users ask sensitive questions about health, finances or work more privately.
Meta said the mode will include safety features to steer users away from harmful topics, and it is unclear whether incognito chats could be produced if legally compelled in litigation.
Meta said the feature will roll out over the next few months, will support only typed text responses, and will require users to confirm their age because Meta does not allow users under 13.
Meta said it is also developing Side Chat to let users privately invoke Meta AI within WhatsApp conversations without notifying other participants.
Analysis
Center-leaning sources report neutrally: they present Meta’s announcement and product details, relay company claims and a Cathcart safety quote, and place the change in industry context by noting Google’s and OpenAI’s privacy options. Language remains factual, avoids loaded terms, and does not push a singular judgment.
