Overview
Amal Khalil, 43, was killed Wednesday in an Israeli strike on a house in southern Lebanon where she had taken cover and colleague Zeinab Faraj was wounded, officials and her employer said.
Khalil and Faraj sheltered after an earlier strike hit a nearby vehicle that killed two people, and rescuers said Khalil remained trapped under rubble for roughly six to seven hours before her body was recovered.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam called the attack deliberate and a war crime, while the Israeli military said it targeted vehicles that posed an immediate threat and denied preventing rescues.
Press freedom groups including the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders condemned the strikes and urged investigations, with CPJ saying Israeli forces have killed roughly 260 to 262 media workers across the region since Oct. 7, 2023.
Her death, the ninth journalist killed in Lebanon this year, comes as Lebanese and Israeli envoys meet in Washington to discuss extending a ceasefire signed on April 16, and Lebanese officials said they would pursue action in international forums.
Analysis
Center-leaning sources emphasize allegations of deliberate targeting and humanitarian harm by foregrounding Lebanese officials and NGOs, using loaded terms like 'war crimes' and 'double violation.' IDF rebuttals appear later and are framed as denials and military explanations, making the cumulative narrative more sympathetic to Lebanese victims while treating Israeli claims as defensive.
