The reporting
Qatar’s former emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has died at age 74, the Amiri Diwan announced without giving a cause of death. Sheikh Hamad took power from his father in 1995 and ruled for 18 years, overseeing Qatar’s rise as a major gas exporter and investor. His reign also expanded the country’s diplomatic profile and media influence, including through Al Jazeera. In 2013, he voluntarily transferred power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
