A wildfire in southwest France that forced 220,000 people to flee has stopped growing after burning an area four times the size of Paris, as crews try to contain it before temperatures rise again. Across France and Spain, wildfires have driven more than 300,000 evacuations during a summer of heat waves and scant rainfall. Bordeaux’s mayor said the city is preparing to receive evacuees, with one fire burning 15km from its outskirts. Spain declared a national emergency in Madrid and Ávila as fires continued to spread.
