What happened
South African police said two separate mass shootings left at least 27 people dead near Johannesburg and Cape Town. In Wedela township, gunmen opened fire at a tavern, killing 17 people and wounding 15. In Lwandle township, gunmen killed 10 people at an entertainment venue or grilled-meat store, with 11 others wounded. The attacks came days after a mass shooting near Durban killed 11 people, underscoring a spike in mass-casualty gun violence. Police said the latest killings may be tied to gangs, organized crime or retaliation. Investigators said the Wedela attackers fired outside, then went inside. No arrests had been made.
