Day 6

Max Miller Abuse Probe

Ohio GOP Rep. Max Miller is under scrutiny after domestic abuse claims and an ethics probe.

The House Ethics Committee is reviewing allegations that Rep. Max Miller may have engaged in domestic violence and illegal drug use after Miller said he would request an investigation into himself. The Ohio Republican faces abuse allegations from his ex-wife, Emily Moreno, daughter of Sen. Bernie Moreno, and a temporary restraining order from Stephanie Grisham. Miller denies wrongdoing, says he will stay in his reelection race, and accuses the Morenos of trying to damage his career. His lawyer also acknowledged defense files accidentally included an unredacted photo of his young daughter.

Child Photo Release

Leans Left

Max Miller’s legal team is accused of mistakenly filing court documents that exposed a graphic or nude image of his daughter, deepening the domestic-abuse scandal and prompting outrage from Bernie Moreno and media coverage.

Defense backfired

Leans Left

Max Miller’s public denial and CNN interview are portrayed as worsening the allegations, with critics saying his Trump-style defenses, evasiveness, and self-pity made the abuse accusations look more credible and intensified resignation calls.

Unfit for office

Leans Left

Commentary argues Max Miller’s domestic-abuse allegations make him unfit to serve, and that his efforts to investigate himself are a stunt to avoid accountability rather than clear his name.

Day 7

Todd Blanche Nomination

The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced Todd Blanche's attorney general bid.

Todd Blanche’s nomination for attorney general is headed to the full Senate after the Judiciary Committee advanced it 12-10, and Sen. John Curtis has said he will vote to confirm him. Blanche secured committee support from Republican holdouts Thom Tillis and John Cornyn after putting in writing that the Justice Department would rescind parts of a settlement tied to President Trump’s IRS lawsuit and would not revive a nearly $1.8 billion fund. Democrats remain opposed, leaving Blanche able to lose only two Republicans if the vote is party-line.

Settlement Standoff

Leans Left

Todd Blanche’s confirmation is being portrayed as endangered but likely salvageable after Collins’s opposition and a brief GOP standoff, with reports that a deal may have defused the fight.

Protecting Deal

Leans Left

Blanche’s confirmation was advanced by a deal with GOP holdouts that promised to block Trump’s $1.8B anti-weaponization slush fund, but critics say the assurances are hollow, nonbinding, and designed to protect the deal.

Rightful Compensation Fund

Leans Right

Todd Blanche is expected to advance toward Senate confirmation after dropping the DOJ’s Anti-Weaponization Fund, which was meant to compensate victims of alleged Biden-era government abuses such as Jan. 6 defendants.

SpaceX Earnings Surge

SpaceX posted strong revenue growth in its first public earnings report.

SpaceX faces fresh pressure as up to 911.5 million insider-held shares become eligible for sale on Aug. 6, following an after-hours stock drop of more than 8% after its first public earnings call. The company reported second-quarter revenue of $7.8 billion, up 92% from a year earlier, and a narrower $541 million net loss. Spending unsettled investors: capital expenditures reached $18.4 billion, including $15.8 billion for AI infrastructure. Starlink drove much of the growth, while compute deals with Anthropic and Google also contributed.

Spending fears

Mostly Center

SpaceX’s revenue growth and Musk’s bold projections are being drowned out by worries about heavy capital spending, especially on AI. Investors are not convinced those bets will pay off soon, and the concern is weighing on the stock.
