What happened
Airlines and the FAA resumed Northeast flights after repairs to a damaged fiber-optic line restored communications at an FAA air traffic control facility in Philadelphia. Controllers had lost radar or radio links for hours, forcing pauses on traffic into Newark, Philadelphia, LaGuardia and JFK. The outage began after a primary line failed, and the backup fiber was unavailable. New Jersey Transit said a crew working on one of its rail projects accidentally cut the line about 10 feet from utility markings, while the failure also exposed a fragile backup system. Newark was hit hardest, with more than 600 flights canceled Monday. Officials warned delays could linger.
