The reporting
A New Mexico state judge on Aug. 6 ordered Meta to pay $567 million into a fund addressing youth mental health harms from Facebook and Instagram, after finding the platforms created a public nuisance for users under 18. The order adds to $375 million in civil penalties a jury imposed in March, bringing Meta’s liability in the case to nearly $942 million. Judge Bryan Biedscheid also ordered changes to teen protections, including limits on young users’ time on the apps and changes to engagement features. New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez filed the case in 2023.
