What happened
Jason Eaton, 51, was convicted by a Vermont jury of attempted murder for shooting three Palestinian college students near the University of Vermont campus in Burlington. The victims, Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid, were walking near Awartani’s grandmother’s home during Thanksgiving break when they were shot. Awartani was left paralyzed from the waist down, and the others were wounded. Eaton did not dispute being the shooter, but his defense sought a not-guilty verdict by reason of insanity. The defense said he had a delusional psychotic disorder, while prosecutors said he intended to kill them. Eaton was jailed pending sentencing, which has not been scheduled.
