What happened

Authorities are investigating a possible new ransom note connected to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and FBI Guthrie Task Force said they recently learned of the note and are testing its credibility. Guthrie is the 84-year-old mother of NBC “Today” host Savannah Guthrie. She was last seen Feb. 1 at her home outside Tucson, Arizona. Police earlier released two notes sent to a Tucson television station, hoping someone would recognize the writer’s wording. One demanded $4 million in cryptocurrency and threatened her life. Another said she had died and was “buried in nature.” Investigators have not said what the new note says. No suspects have been arrested.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning accounts treated the development as a careful law-enforcement update, keeping the focus on uncertainty rather than drama. MS NOW emphasized that officials had not explained how the note surfaced or what it contained. The Seattle Times lingered on the larger mystery, pointing to conflicting notes, no arrests and unresolved questions.

From the right

Right-leaning accounts leaned harder into the late turn in the case, while still stressing that investigators were testing credibility. The New York Post cited officials saying they were checking social media comments tied to the note. The Daily Mail cast the case through a frightening home abduction and ransom-demand frame.
