What happened

Naval personnel responded to a mishap during aircraft recovery aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower on Sept. 28, off Virginia at about 6:18 p.m. EDT. Two Navy aviators assigned to Carrier Air Wing 3 ejected and were rescued by search-and-rescue personnel. Four shipboard sailors were injured in the incident. One had non-life-threatening injuries and went to a Norfolk-area hospital. The Eisenhower had recently finished planned maintenance and was conducting carrier qualifications off Virginia. The carrier normally carries two-seat jets, matching the crew members involved. The Navy said emergency training helped the crew respond quickly and safely. The Navy has not identified the aircraft type or the cause. The aviators returned to the ship for medical evaluation.
