What happened

A medical helicopter carrying five people crashed into the ocean off Catalina Island near Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Authorities said two people were killed, two were hospitalized, and one person remained missing. The crash happened shortly after takeoff from Catalina Island, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn and local authorities said. Los Angeles County Fire said it received crash reports shortly before 8 p.m., then sent helicopters and divers. The U.S. Coast Guard and other local agencies joined the search, with the aircraft submerged in about 240 feet of water. Reach Air Medical Services was believed to own the helicopter. A spokesperson said Reach’s immediate concern was those involved. The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate as crews search overnight for the missing person.

How each side covered it

From the left

Only one left-leaning outlet we track covered this: CNN, under the headline “California helicopter crash kills 2 people, leaves 2 hospitalized and 1 missing, report says | CNN”.

From the right

Right-leaning coverage framed the tragedy as a medevac accident and an urgent rescue, rather than dwelling on the aircraft operator. Fox News emphasized the rescue response, including fire crews, divers, the sheriff and the Coast Guard. Fox News also led with the toll, centering one person missing and four hospitalized. The New York Post cited Squawk on how quickly the aircraft disappeared after takeoff.
