The reporting

A neutral summary of the key facts most sources agree on, drawn from reporting across the political spectrum.

Conservative lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as Colombia’s president in Cali, breaking with the tradition of holding inaugurations in Bogotá and replacing leftist Gustavo Petro after a June runoff win over Iván Cepeda Castro. De la Espriella chose the volatile southwestern city and tight security for the ceremony to underscore a pledge to confront guerrilla and drug-trafficking groups. He also promised to cut government spending by as much as 40%, revive oil and gas production, restore Ecopetrol and strengthen ties with the United States.
