The reporting
President Donald Trump said in a Punchbowl News interview released Friday that voters are “angry at Republicans” but “not angry at me,” as he discussed the GOP’s risk of losing control of Congress in the November midterms. He questioned whether his supporters would vote when he is not on the ballot, saying he gets “a tremendous vote.” Republicans are defending narrow House and Senate majorities amid affordability concerns and the war in Iran. A Quinnipiac survey released last week put Trump’s approval at 32 percent.
Analysis & opinion
Self-Inflicted DeclineMostly Left
Trump’s current weakness stems from failures of his own presidency, including economic disappointment and crises over tariffs, war, and misplaced priorities. The damage is self-inflicted, not simply the result of bad luck or disloyal Republicans.
Blaming RepublicansMostly Left
Trump is trying to pin likely Republican midterm losses on GOP lawmakers and the party rather than on himself. His blame-shifting is an effort to make excuses in advance and avoid responsibility for voter backlash.
Polling DenialMostly Left
Trump’s claims about his popularity and voters’ attitudes are not supported by polling or political reality. He is presenting himself as personally insulated from public anger even as evidence shows voters are dissatisfied with him too.
Bad Team PlayerMostly Left
Trump is hurting Republican midterm prospects by treating the party’s problems as someone else’s burden. He appears unwilling to help vulnerable Republicans because he thinks voter anger stops with them and does not reach him.
