The reporting
The Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as U.S. attorney general early Saturday in a 50-49 vote, giving President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney permanent leadership of the Justice Department after he served as acting attorney general since April. Every Democrat opposed the nomination, joined by Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana cast the decisive vote and later said on Face the Nation that his decision was “not black or white” but a “gradation of gray.” Cassidy said he was confident Blanche would uphold the Constitution regarding upcoming elections.
Analysis & opinion
Blanche capitulationMostly Left
Confirming Todd Blanche was a grave mistake because he cannot be trusted to uphold the Constitution or protect the justice system. Republican support for him amounted to surrendering to Donald Trump and normalizing conduct that should instead face accountability.
