The reporting
Apple Maps changed Lake Ontario’s label to “Lake America” for users in the United States, while users in Canada continue to see “Lake Ontario.” President Donald Trump ordered the federal name change last week during a trade dispute with Canada and directed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to update the Geographic Names Information System within 30 days. Google Maps made the same U.S.-only switch over the weekend, making Apple the second major map provider to adopt the new label. MapQuest has publicly refused to make the change.
Analysis & opinion
Rename RejectedLeans Left
Trump’s push to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” is a misguided political stunt. Americans broadly oppose the move, making it a backlash-producing failure rather than a popular patriotic gesture.
