The reporting
President Donald Trump has asked Apple to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America” in Apple Maps, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said Monday, after Apple continued using “Lake Ontario.” Google Maps changed the lake’s label to “Lake America” for U.S. users after Trump signed an executive order renaming it. The shared Great Lake borders Ontario and New York, and Canada continues to recognize it as Lake Ontario. Ontario opened a review after some public websites using Google maps showed the new name; MapQuest downloads rose after it declined to switch.
Analysis & opinion
Petty Canada FeudLeans Left
Trump’s push around renaming Lake Ontario is a petty escalation in his conflict with Canada. His response to Canadian criticism looks desperate and volatile, not like a serious policy move.
Tech Map PressureLeft & Center
Trump is pressuring major tech companies to adopt his preferred “Lake America” label on their maps. Google’s change amounts to capitulation, and Apple is being bullied to follow suit.
