Trump Invites Putin To G20
The Trump administration invited Vladimir Putin to the Miami G20 summit.
What happened
The Trump administration has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami this December. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the invitation after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the UN General Assembly in New York. Putin has not attended a G20 summit in person since 2019. His isolation grew after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Trump has not secured a deal to end the war, even after meeting Putin in Alaska in August 2025. Rubio said the invitation gives Putin a chance to engage world leaders. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he would attend and meet Putin. The Kremlin has not publicly answered.

The invitation read as pragmatic diplomacy that could also soften Putin’s isolation and alarm Ukraine and European allies. The New York Times quoted Rubio calling it “an opportunity” for Putin to engage the president and other world leaders. The Guardian described a “significant reversal” of Russia’s isolation, while the Daily Beast emphasized Doral as Trump mixing diplomacy with his private golf business.
