What happened
NIAC Action filed a federal lawsuit asking a Washington judge to declare President Donald Trump’s Iran war unconstitutional because Congress never authorized it. The challenge followed a Senate vote on a war powers resolution that would have pushed U.S. forces out of Iran hostilities without formal authorization; it failed 49-50, after Sen. John Fetterman backed Trump’s position and Sen. Angela Alsobrooks did not vote. The suit says Trump is waging an indefinite war that violates Congress’s constitutional power to authorize war. NIAC President Jamal Abdi said no president should be able to take the country into such a war alone. With the Senate defeat blocking the measure, courts are the next battleground.
