What happened

Kurt Olsen resigned from the Justice Department team investigating a so-called “grand conspiracy” against Donald Trump. His exit is the second major resignation from the Florida-based probe in recent weeks, after Joseph diGenova left the team. Olsen had been working in the Miami-based U.S. attorney’s office after serving as Trump’s White House director of election security and integrity. The probe is examining whether Obama- and Biden-era officials conspired against Trump over Russia-election inquiries and the Mar-a-Lago documents case. Olsen had pushed challenges to Trump’s 2020 defeat and had no prior election-law experience. Sources cited in coverage blamed Washington pressure for indictments, while DOJ said the investigation continues. What happens next remains unclear.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the probe as a political effort aimed at Trump’s foes, not a standard criminal inquiry. The Seattle Times described prosecutors as pursuing an “ill-defined right-wing theory” about a conspiracy against Trump. CNN leaned into Olsen’s identity as a Trump loyalist and election denier with questionable credentials. AlterNet cast the resignation as another high-profile blow to a probe in turmoil. MEDIAite cited a source saying pressure to seek midterm indictments helped fuel departures.
