What happened

Estonian authorities accused Russian security services of ordering an August arson attack on Tallinn premises used by Milrem Robotics, which supplies unmanned military vehicles to Ukraine. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied it, calling the accusation unfounded and unsupported. Three Latvian suspects were detained in Latvia on 17-18 August and later handed to Estonia. Estonia’s Internal Security Service said the attack was deliberate, pre-planned sabotage attributable to Russia. The government said it fit a broader Russian campaign to intimidate European countries and weaken support for Ukraine. The fire broke out overnight and was quickly controlled. Estonia’s foreign minister summoned Russia’s chargé d’affaires, while allies backed Tallinn. Security measures and diplomatic pressure are expected to follow.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning accounts treated the fire as a Russian-ordered sabotage case, centering the target’s role in aiding Ukraine. The Guardian put the drone maker’s Ukraine supply role in the foreground while assigning blame to Russia in its own framing. Al Jazeera cited Estonia’s broader-campaign argument, with a source saying Russia aimed at intimidation and weaker support for Kyiv. It also kept Moscow’s denial in view, citing Dmitry Peskov’s rejection of the claims as baseless.
