What happened
Sen. Mike Lee blocked a bipartisan Senate effort to fast-track the Protecting Presidential Memorials Act, which would have barred demolition of the Kennedy Center and other congressionally authorized presidential memorials without explicit congressional approval. The bill was led by Sen. Jeff Merkley and Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who said Congress had authorized and funded renovations, not demolition. The fight began after Trump took control of the institution, removed its board, and tried to remake its programming and branding, including efforts to put his name on the building. Trump said the center needed his name to get renovation money. Lee called the bill partisan scaremongering. A judge has ordered notice before any demolition plans.
How each side covered it
From the left
Left-leaning accounts framed the fight as a test of Congress’s control over presidential memorials, rather than a narrow Senate-process dispute. The Guardian cast the measure as a barrier to unilateral demolition of memorials designated by Congress. New Republic emphasized one Republican senator blocking a bipartisan, commonsense protection effort. The Guardian quoted Merkley portraying Trump’s push as self-glorifying and authoritarian.
From the right
Right-leaning accounts centered the bill on fears about Trump and treated Lee’s move as an objection to fast-tracking. Washington Examiner tied the proposal to concern that Trump could tear down presidential memorials. Deseret News focused on Lee blocking a fast-track bipartisan bid requiring congressional approval for demolition. Washington Examiner highlighted Lee’s defense that Democrats were wasting time on partisan scaremongering.
