What happened

CNN, MS NOW and Politico asked a federal judge to block the White House from restoring its access ban while their lawsuit proceeds. U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly had already issued a 14-day order returning their credentials, and it expires Oct. 8. Kelly previously said the outlets were likely to win on due process because their credentials were revoked without proper notice or a chance to respond. The outlets said the administration would immediately reimpose a full ban and cause lasting harm. They say Trump aimed to punish unfavorable coverage; the administration cites professionalism, decorum and national security. Kelly ordered the government to respond by Friday.

How each side covered it

From the left

The case was cast as a First Amendment fight over press freedom and the outlets’ right to challenge White House exclusion. The New York Times noted the outlets’ claim that the ban violated their right to contest exclusion and their First Amendment rights. On CNN, attorneys for CNN, MS NOW and Politico said the motive was to “punish and chill” journalism the White House disliked, casting the ban as retaliation rather than neutral access. MS NOW also emphasized lawyers’ warning that continued exclusion could chill other independent reporting and deprive the public of White House coverage.
