What happened

The White House changed its new America.gov AI chatbot after launch so it stopped answering questions that had contradicted President Donald Trump’s claims. The bot had said Joe Biden won the 2020 election and that there was no sign of widespread fraud, but by Wednesday it called election and inflation questions “political commentary.” Trump had promoted America.gov as a single digital entry point for tasks like booking national-park campsites, comparing Medicare plans, and getting veterans’ benefits. CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale documented the shift, while the White House said the tool will keep being updated with more accurate federal information. The next question is who controls its answers.

How each side covered it

From the left

Left-leaning outlets framed the bot as an accidental fact-checker that briefly pierced Trump’s preferred version of events. MS NOW said the tool presented facts at odds with Trump’s “alternate reality”. MEDIAite cast the update as a White House effort to stop accurate contradictions by labeling them off-limits political commentary. MS NOW also treated the rollout as a glitchy embarrassment.
